DREAMS EXPLAINED

30th Anniversary
Joseph 1991-2021
Limited Edition 250 prints, personalised and signed on the back of the print.
This month 30 years ago I stepped into the crazy world of musical theatre with a show called Joseph.
What I initially thought was a relatively straight forward gig became a mountainous achievement on a number of levels.
Big responsibility, big discipline…
Attention that I’d never experienced before … creatively I had to dig deep.
I was 23 years old.
I was the lead in major West End show, how the hell did that happen?
Funny ...
I never set out to be a musical theatre star, but what an opportunity , and what a reinvention.
I underestimated just how pivotal this moment could be!
Here I am talking about it 30 years on … life changing.
Pure magic
Some of the Memories of that time…
Opening night .. my dad in the stalls! Seeing him emotionally charged and leading a standing ovation at the end of the show. Amazing feeling.
The stage door jammed packed with fans …
Stopping the traffic opposite Carnaby street in between performances.
A number 1 single, number 1 album.
The roof of the palladium during summer where the cast would relax in between performances. Not allowed anymore due to health and safety :(
Meeting Liza Minnelli in my dressing room backstage …
Seeing princess Diana in the front row of the dress circle.
My gran flying all the way over from Melbourne to see me perform.
(she’d never left Melbourne in her entire life)
The amazing cast , crew orchestra and band.
And finally, Leaving the palladium one SATURDAY night to go surfing in Cornwall … rocking up to the show with my surfboard under my arms.
Magical moments that flicker through my mind rewinding back to the glorious days of 91.
To celebrate this 30th anniversary and the return to the palladium this summer 21, I’ve drawn a coat of colours surrounded by words that I think reflect my feelings about this incredible moment and beyond.
I’ve drawn a coat that symbolises everything Joseph …
I’ve given it my own stamp with words that reflect dreams and dreamers. Appropriate to everything Joseph represents to me.
‘Perhaps you are not where you feel you should be … but from one dreamer to another a careful word of advice. You could reach every one of your goals and still find yourself unfulfilled.
The true essence of life exists in the in between. It is in the striving that your excellence is exposed to the world. It is in the setbacks that the strength of your spirit is learned. In the unfinished dream lies the full and burning heart of life.
It’s only a spell of the mind, an artful deception that you might find fulfilment in fortune, fame, perfection or power. Life is lived here : in the distance you have still left to travel. This is where the magic happens …
Enjoy.
